Review of the gig..

GLORIA CYCLES live @ the Borderline 8th July 08

The Brighton based, Gloria Cycles, were first brought to Red Stripe’s attention at Liverpool Sound City after meeting one of their label’s contacts from Wendy Bikes Records. After unfortunately missing their gig in Liverpool, from one hell of a hectic schedule, the team were really intrigued by the songs on their myspace page and were adamant that we would have to go see them live.

Borderline is a great small venue, situated in the centre of London, with an old school blues styled atmosphere and has been host to a number of fantastic live acts such as Oasis, the Libertines and Ben Harper over the years. Music is definitely the main reason for people flocking to the Borderline where you can see some great live bands playing intimate sets in front of a captivated audience.

The band, formed by Kenny McCracken and Julian Ward, first met at Brighton University, where both were studying photography, however it wasn’t until they delved into their music taste similarities that Gloria Cycles was born. Jen Dalby, a fashion student, was the next member of the indie rock band, and her stance within the band was strengthened when they heard her haunting yet alluring voice which worked perfectly during the short set they played.

The gig was energetic, and gave the ample crowd the opportunity to move their feet and socialise within the confines of this convivial club. The music was great and it was particularly interesting hearing the harmonies created by the two singers in the band. It almost looked at times as if all the members of the band could have been in completely different genres of music, however this didn’t prevent them from looking great on stage and performing songs like ‘Chancer’ and ‘Vegas’ with great passion and style.

How can you beat a band with a hot girl on bass!
